摘要

This paper describes the effect of increase in radial clearance and surface roughness on film formation of hydrodynamic bearing in backup roll chocks of a hot strip Mill. Detailed analysis described in this paper suggests radial clearance and surface roughness increases due to wear with time. The cumulative effect of increase in clearance and increased surface roughness caused increased demand of oil in the bearing and interaction between surface asperities. The oil film thinned and was broken at some point. This caused metal to metal contact and subsequent bearing seizure. The same type of failure can be avoided in hydrodynamic babbitt bearings by implementing the recommendations which have been addressed in this paper.
