Failure Analysis of Inconel 718 Corroded Downhole Pressure Transducer
摘要
This study aims to analyze the failure caused by a corroded Inconel 718 downhole pressure transducer. The Inconel 718 diaphragm of the pressure transducer deteriorated in service after only a brief period. The failure analysis methodology was executed, leading to the identification of the cause of the failure. Macrostructure, visual examination, chemical composition, and mechanical testing were investigated. The microstructures were also examined using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). It was found that the failure was due to the sedimentation of solid particles of iron oxide and salts onto the internal cavity of the transducer, and this led to crevice corrosion damage.
