Effects of Cryogenic Treatment on Microstructure, Mechanical Properties, and Wear Resistance of LA91 Mg-Li Alloys

The effects of cryogenic treatment (CT) duration (0-48 h) on microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of as-cast Mg-9Li-1Al (LA91) alloys were investigated in this work. Results showed that under the synergistic effect of precipitation strengthening and grain refinement, the tensile strength of LA91 alloy peaked at 133.06 MPa under CT for 36 h. Furthermore, the elongation of the alloy increased to 12.1% with the increased volume fraction of β phase and grain refinement in β phase. However, when duration under cryogenic treatment was extended to 48 h, the strength and elongation of LA91 alloy decreased to 128.8 MPa, 56.9 HV, and 7.8%, respectively, due to grain coarsening in β phase and the saturation of dislocation density. The specimen cryogenic treated for 24 h exhibited the lowest wear rate, an 18.1% reduction compared to the untreated specimen.
