Tribological Behavior of Newly Developed Aluminum Nitride Dispersion Strengthened Steel through Powder Metallurgy Route
摘要
Recently aluminum nitride (AlN) dispersion strengthened steel was developed utilizing an unconventional method of gaseous nitriding of pre-alloyed Fe-2.3 wt.%Al powder followed by its consolidation using spark plasma sintering (SPS). This paper focuses on wear studies of this newly developed steel through dry sliding wear using pin-on-disk apparatus. Wear samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and surface roughness. Apart from wear volume loss and coefficient of friction, wear coefficients of the tested materials is also calculated and are compared with the literature data of some other steel samples. A significant enhancement in wear resistance was evidenced for nitride dispersion strengthened (NDS) steel containing Fe-Al oxides in addition to AlN precipitates. Wear mechanisms have also been altered from samples tested with or without the nitride dispersion.
