Study of Wear Resistant and Self-Lubricating Epoxy/Ti3SiC2 MAX Phase Composites
摘要
In this study, the tribological properties of epoxy composites reinforced with low concentrations of Ti3SiC2 MAX phase particles (1, 5, and 10 wt.%) were investigated under dry sliding conditions at room temperature. Tests were conducted using normal loads of 5 N, 7 N, and 10 N. The epoxy/10 wt.% Ti3SiC2 exhibited self-lubricating behavior, achieving the lowest friction coefficient of 0.29 and a negligible wear rate under 10 N load, demonstrating the composite's ability to reduce friction and maintain high wear resistance even under high loads. Compared to neat epoxy, the friction coefficient decreased by 43%, and the wear rate was reduced by at least more than 200-fold. For comparison, epoxy reinforced with 10 wt.% TiC was fabricated. The incorporation of TiC particles drastically deteriorated the wear resistance of epoxy resin. The superior performance of Ti3SiC2 compared to TiC is attributed to its strong coherence with the epoxy matrix, enabling excellent filler distribution and promoting the formation of lubricating and anti-wear films on the sliding surfaces. The findings suggest potential directions for development of lighter and more efficient materials for industrial devices and functional applications.
