Synergistic Mechanisms in Magnetic Abrasive Finishing Process: Optimizing Precision and Internal Roundness of Inconel-718 Superalloys for Aerospace Applications

The need for super alloys has grown significantly in the present era delivering higher strength and thermal stability. Inconel-718 is an emerging superalloy that contains several constituents enable it appropriate for wear resistance, hot hardness, and high strength. Thus, making it a suitable contender for aerospace, gas refineries, and nuclear power plants. Due to the presence of tough elements, it is difficult to finish the internal surface of said material through conventional finishing techniques. Therefore, an experimental setup on a chemically assisted magnetic abrasive finishing (CMAF) process has been developed to enhance the internal roundness of Inconel-718 cylinders. Experimental observations and scanning electron microscope images concluded that elongated processing time (100 min), 3 mm pole-work gap, 35%, abrasive weight percentage, 60 mm abrasive particle size and 650 grams/liter of etchant concentration has improved internal roundness of thick cylinder by 42.86% compared to the initial setting.
