Combined Effect of Laser Surface Texturing and CrCN Coating on the Friction Between Piston Ring and Cylinder Liner Interface
摘要
The friction loss between piston rings and cylinder liner interface is a major contributor to energy losses in internal combustion engines and accounts for 40-50% of the overall frictional energy losses. In this study, the combined effect of surface texturing and the surface coating applied to the piston ring to reduce the coefficient of friction at the interface has been investigated. The circular dimple was applied to the piston ring through the laser surface texturing technique and the CrCN coating was deposited on the piston ring through the DC magnetron sputtering technique. The textured sample and the coating over the textured sample are compared for the frictional analysis under the lubricated condition, which has been simulated using the reciprocating engine tribometer rig, and the coated textured sample shows up to a 10% average reduction in the coefficient of friction compared to the textured sample.
