Hot Forging of Induction Sintered Ti-46Al-1B (at.%) Alloy Synthesized via Powder Metallurgy Route

摘要

Secondary processing of the powder consolidates can be a relatively effective and efficient method to enhance density and properties which required for getting it to the final component state. The gamma titanium aluminide alloy powder having composition of Ti-46Al-1B (at.%) was produced using mechanical alloying route in a high energy planetary ball mill; powder is then cold compacted and induction sintered in a can at two different temperatures 900 and 1000 °C. These are then recanned and forged into a pancake again using continuous induction heating to a temperature of 1100 °C and simultaneously applied load of 20 tons. After the press forging operation, the specimen was examined in detail for the microstructural analysis and mechanical properties. The optimal induction sintering and forging parameters were found to be sintering at 900 °C followed by forging at 1100 °C which gave relatively higher densification with grain size in the ultrafine range even after the forging operation.
