Machinability Evaluation and Surface Characteristics in Post-machining of Inconel 625 Fabricated by Laser Powder-Bed Fusion

Post-machining of additively manufactured (AMed) components is considered to be an efficient approach to improving surface quality. This study aims to investigate the effects of cutting speed and feed on the machinability and the machined surface quality of the Inconel 625 nickel-based superalloy fabricated by laser powder-bed fusion (L-PBF). Significant periodic fluctuation of cutting forces is prominent under high speed while better surface quality with fewer defects corresponds to low speed. Chip morphologies are all in the form of continuous ribbon shapes. Machining-induced microhardness enhancement indicates the work-hardening effect. In addition, the correlation of surface morphology and cutting force fluctuation is revealed. The findings promote a comprehensive understanding of the machining behaviors of AMed Inconel 625 and benefit cutting parameters optimization with high surface quality expectations.
