Comparing the Corrosion Behavior of CoCrNi Medium-Entropy Alloy and Duplex Stainless Steel in Ammonium Chloride Solution

The corrosion behavior of CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy was systematically compared with 2205 duplex stainless steel in NH4Cl solution. The MEA possesses more protective passive film and excellent corrosion resistance due to its higher contents of passive elements and single-phase solid solution structure. The flat, uniform, and compact passive film covering on the MEA inhibits the corrosion of the substrate. The metastable pitting of CoCrNi MEA is more difficult to nucleate and develop into stable pitting, and the galvanic corrosion effect between the two phases of the DSS promotes the generation of pits.
