Optimizing Weldability of EH550 Offshore Engineering Steel via TiO2-Assisted Element Transfer During Submerged Arc Welding

MnO–SiO2–TiO2 fluxes have been designed to improve weldability for EH550 offshore engineering steel. It has been demonstrated that 40 mass pct TiO2 enables the weld metal to possess a yield strength of 593 MPa and an impact energy of 58.9 J. Such enhancement is directly attributed to TiO2-assisted element transfer, which suppresses Mn and Si contents while simultaneously reduces C loss by 0.0116 mass pct. Underlying mechanisms responsible for optimal weldability have been postulated.
