Effect of Aluminum-Oxygen (Al-O) Enrichment on Inclusion Evolution During Cerium Treatment

Nano-scale micro-zones of aluminum-oxygen (Al-O) enrichment have been observed using transmission electron microscope (TEM) at the interface between RE inclusions and steel matrix in Al-killed sulfur-containing steels, which is attributed to the adsorption of aluminum-oxygen (Al-O) to RE-inclusion surfaces based on the results of the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The elemental enrichment micro-zone favors to the evolution of transient inclusions to Ce-Al-O or Al2O3 since the thermodynamic stability of Ce-S and Ce-O-S inclusions has been decreased.
