<p>The development of crystallographic texture during the thermo-mechanical processing of aluminum semi-finished products is commonly associated with the formation of plastic anisotropy, including the well-known earing phenomenon in Al packaging sheet. Earing in Al sheet can be controlled by producing suited textures which are comprised of a balanced mixture of rolling and recrystallization texture components. For this purpose, the Al industry has devised two main process routes for adjusting texture and, therewith, regulating earing in Al packaging products. Medium strength sheet with very low earing is achieved by an intermediate annealing before a light final temper rolling pass (H14/H16 route). High-strength material with low-earing properties, <i>e.g.,</i> can body stock, is obtained by heavy cold rolling of hot strip with a pronounced cube texture (H19 route). In the present review, the two processing routes are summarized and their key features are discussed. Practical means to improve earing through an adjustment of the relevant processing parameters with the resulting textural ramifications are addressed. Finally, we will touch upon measures to reduce earing in deep-drawn cups by employing an advanced convolute cut-edge design rather than conventional circular blanks.</p>
