Deciphering Peritectic Solidification Characteristics for the Simulated Weld Metal of EH36 Shipbuilding Steel

Peritectic characteristics during the simulated solidification of EH36 shipbuilding steel welds employing a confocal scanning laser microscope have been documented in situ. The initial δ solidifies from the liquid in a cellular/dendritic manner, with a substantial peritectic undercooling of 113.5 ± 13.9 °C. The solid–liquid interface velocity undergoes an abrupt increase at the onset of peritectic transition. Furthermore, the rapid δ → γ phase transformation is attributed to the massive transformation enabled by the large driving force.
