<p>The biotechnology and biosafety training workshop organized by Tuskegee University and sponsored by the USDA-FAS Cochran Program occurred September 2019. The workshop aimed to enable Côte d’Ivoire Cochran Fellows to acquire capacity-building skills on the Regulation of Modern Biotechnology and Biosafety leveraging US biotechnology and biosafety regulatory systems. The participants received theoretical and practical training from various subjects, laboratory exercises, and visits to Tuskegee University, Auburn University, and Mississippi Biotechnology Center. The convergent objectives underscored the scientific, agronomic, and economic; food, plant, and animal health; and socio-cultural, regulatory, and ethical issues related to developing modern biotechnology techniques, such as transgenesis and localized genome modification from clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats. The lectures emphasized various aspects of biotechnology and biosafety, including food safety, climate change, food security, international trade, policy and legal framework, slide preparation, media displays, gene mapping, and genome editing. Participants expressed their deep satisfaction with the training, the planning, and quality of the expert presenters, and rated the program as very successful, with tremendous impacts on the future of in-country program capacity conducive to establishing policies with permanent and effective regulations on genetically modified food structures able to assess their safety.</p>
