<p>Despite a decade of increasing global temperatures and unprecedented climate change associated impacts, global emissions have risen, and the impacts of climate change continue to threaten community health and livelihoods. While sustainability and climate action objectives have been adopted by more different types of organizations, there is a critical gap in better understanding the different ways in which specific and meaningful solutions can be implemented. This paper examines the implementation of diverse sustainability practices, emphasizing an ecosystem of actors which contribute to shaping sustainability and climate practices. We identify three key dimensions often overlooked in current approaches: a deeper interrogation of the actors and their functions in shaping sustainability practice, a more detailed analysis into relational dynamics of these systems, and a strategic view of the sequences of sustainability practices. Drawing on qualitative data from over fifty cases from Canada, Sweden, Australia, Mexico, Colombia and the United States, we mapped over a hundred sequences of sustainability and disaster resilience-oriented solutions, highlighting how these practices unfold over time and the roles different actors play in their implementation. Our findings reveal a sequence and combination of technical, social and financial collaborative relationships, with communities serving as co-producers of knowledge and innovators rather than passive beneficiaries.We propose a research-to-action agenda focused on capacity building and experimentation aimed at fostering meaningful engagement across diverse stakeholders. Ultimately, this study underscores the necessity for a systems approach to sustainability that goes beyond firm-centric strategies, advocating for innovative practices that leverage community insights and support transformative change in business operations. This methodology contributes to both sustainability science and practical strategies for understanding and embedding sustainability within the private sector, emphasizing the need for tailored approaches that recognize the unique contexts and capacities of local systems.</p>
