Ecological decline degrades non-material values—but resistance and resilience complicate the story

Non-material values of ecosystems are important contributors to well-being. Though numerous studies estimate how environmental change impacts non-material values, few empirically examine actual observed or experienced impacts. As myriad pressures degrade ecosystems worldwide, understanding how these changes affect non-material values and what other forces may be at play is a critical step toward both protecting these values and understanding their interactions with socioecological systems. This study examines interactions between environmental change and non-material values in the context of reef and coastal change in Hawaiʻi. We conducted 28 semi-structured interviews with residents following a mass coral bleaching event and years of rapid coastal development. Participants described environmental changes, their non-material values, and how changes affect those values. We found negative impacts to non-material values, particularly those related to aesthetics and traditional subsistence activities, and significant grief associated with environmental changes. However, participants also described resilience and resistance to change as they fight to maintain these values. Such efforts introduce feedbacks, delays, and uncertainties, which suggest that straightforward projections that environmental change unambiguously degrades non-material values are likely too simplistic. Instead, embedded and relational conceptions of human-nature interactions may better reflect interactions between environmental change and non-material values. We additionally describe how colonialism’s ongoing impacts affect participants’ ability to maintain non-material values amidst changing environmental conditions, and how our findings support two emerging suggestions in scholarly literature: that ecological grief and eco-anxiety may motivate pro-environmental action in cases of partial or incomplete environmental destruction, and that relational values can support pro-environmental action.
