<p>With recourse to differential theory of trust, this article aims to analyse the role of trust for drop-out in continuing education as well as the development of trust before a&#xa0;drop-out. In order to answer the research questions, 13&#xa0;guided problem-centered interviews with participants who dropped out of an adult education course were analysed by means of qualitative content analysis. The results point on the one hand to a&#xa0;lack of trust as a&#xa0;causal factor for drop-out. In the analyses, the processual character of trust becomes particularly clear: If the learner’s given trust is not honored, then trust cannot be developed from the dropout’s point of view. The loss of trust is different if trust is initially built up but then lost again during the relationship. In the constellation of trust maintenance, the relationship of trust between lecturer and learner continues even after the learner dropped out. It becomes clear that learners trust their teachers in continuing education during their participation in the course, which is decisive for retention or drop-out.</p>
