Ungleichheiten in der Lehrkräfteversorgung: Eine Analyse zur Verteilung qualifizierten Lehrpersonals auf Schulen mit unterschiedlicher Schülerschaft und verschiedenen sozio-ökonomischen Kontexten

In Germany, the shortage of teachers has led to an increased hiring of alternatively certified teachers in many federal states, and to the prevalence of teaching outside of teachers’ certified subject areas. In light of the increasing proportions of this group of teachers, the question arises as to which schools are particularly affected by these measures. This study utilizes official school statistics from an eastern German state to investigate the distribution of teachers without formal teaching qualifications and out-of-field teaching. It is based on data from two school years (2016/17 and 2019/20) from all primary schools in the state. The findings indicate that schools with a higher number of students with a migration background and fewer recommendations for academic track schools (Gymnasium) employ more teachers without teaching qualifications. Longitudinal analyses reveal that schools with larger faculties, fewer students with gymnasium recommendations, and a weaker socio-economic environment experience an increase in such teachers and out-of-field teaching. The paper discusses potential implications arising from the observed unequal distribution of teachers.
