摘要

The young subject of Islamic theology was associated with a clear political agenda at the time of its establishment: with the domestication of religion. Looking beyond this political agenda, the practice of the discipline shows how the boundaries between knowledge and religion are being drawn in the present day. Whereas theology was traditionally regarded as the place where the boundaries between science and religion were negotiated, the new discipline draws the line between religiosity and religion. In the paper, the practice of the distinction between knowledge and religion via the subject is understood as an expression of the actualization of societal relations to religion. The demarcation implies that religiosity as a subjective factor of religion is included in the production of academic knowledge, while objective religion is excluded. Religion appears to be a legitimate component of knowledge constructions when it is constructed subjectively. The thesis is discussed against the background of the problems of drawing boundaries in relation to religion and interpreted as a current finding on dealing with religion in secular institutions.
