摘要

In this article, we examine the theoretical concept of hybrid masculinities focusing on fathers as caring parents from a praxeological perspective. Based on 42 couple interviews (2021–2022, n = 42), we analyse paternal practices, motivations of fathers and couples, as well as the parental exchange of knowledge and the formation of competences in the care of infants. Parents in Austria were interviewed who had each received childcare allowance for at least five months. In the praxeological analysis, we focus on fathers, as caring for infants was not included in normative constructions of masculinity until a few decades ago. We ask how fathers develop practices and care activities based on the use of childcare allowance. In the evaluation of the empirical data, in a topic-specific content analysis, guided by the semi-structured guideline questions and – based on previous findings – applying Informed Grounded Theory in coding the data, we focused on everyday actions in infant care, which previously were not included in constructions of masculinities. The results show that fathers succeed in taking on and embodying caring tasks, but that they also continue to conform to normative constructions of masculinity in their long-term reconciliation of childcare and paid work.

The assumption of paternal responsibility and presence in the family has so far been viewed in an individualized way and primarily understood as support for female partners. The typology of fatherhood that has been created illustrates the connections between the motivation of the fathers, the motives and objectives of the couples and a sustainable paternal assumption of caring practices. Especially fathers whose motivation to act was guided by gender-equitable objectives developed sustainable caring practices in the areas of nutrition, housework and in taking on emotional and cognitive tasks in infant care.
