<p>In his laconic film, Aki Kaurismäki tells the story of Henri Boulanger, a&#xa0;French outsider in market-driven London during the Thatcher era. After 15&#xa0;years as a&#xa0;low-level employee, he is laid off and experiences loneliness, isolation, and rejection as a&#xa0;non-British citizen. He plans to hire a&#xa0;killer to murder him when his encounter with Margaret rekindles his desire to live. Can he prevent his own murder now? The film addresses loneliness, moral ambiguity, and the costs of modernization. Ironically, it ends with the killer killing himself—another loser. Drawing on psychological theories of melancholy and suicidality, the analysis discusses the consequences of social change and modernization.
