摘要

Empathy is essential for a successful working relationship between client and counselor. This article reviews, in a narrative style, current research on the trainability of empathy and explores its relevance for counseling contexts, particularly when working with vulnerable groups. Based on five meta-analyses and eleven systematic reviews, the findings show that empathy training — especially targeting cognitive and behavioral empathy — can be effective when using modular, target-group-specific approaches and combination of different methods. The paper proposes an integrative training framework based on these findings.
