<p>The “infinite otherness of the other” is a&#xa0;central topos in the ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Lévinas. He uses it to outline the fundamental unavailability of the other, who can never become a&#xa0;possession which I&#xa0;could control according to my needs. Instead of appropriation, a&#xa0;relationship with the other is the decisive category and thus responsibility as a&#xa0;response to the being of the other. This is illustrated by the polarities of autonomy vs. heteronomy, need vs. desire and phenomenon vs. epiphany. Finally, the author discusses the significance of these considerations for a&#xa0;“responsive” resp. responsible dialogical attitude in the various helping and counselling professions.</p>

The “infinite otherness of the other” is a central topos in the ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Lévinas. He uses it to outline the fundamental unavailability of the other, who can never become a possession which I could control according to my needs. Instead of appropriation, a relationship with the other is the decisive category and thus responsibility as a response to the being of the other. This is illustrated by the polarities of autonomy vs. heteronomy, need vs. desire and phenomenon vs. epiphany. Finally, the author discusses the significance of these considerations for a “responsive” resp. responsible dialogical attitude in the various helping and counselling professions.
