Proton carrier mass in ABO3 perovskite systems when submitted to external perturbations

Barium cerates and zirconates attracted significant interest due to their importance for the development of energy devices using protonic transport. In the context of recent observations of the phonon-assisted proton hopping in these materials, results of the fitting procedure in terms of a proton polaron are considered form the effective mass viewpoint. The setting up of an equation for the temperature-dependent effective mass allows to elucidate how external effects, such as the laser excitation of the O-H stretch mode, and the subsequent vibrational energy redistribution influence this quantity. A special emphasis is placed on the role played by assist phonons in determining the proton polaron behavior. Estimates of changes in proton masses due to the temperature-dependent proton coupling with specific lattice vibrational modes during hopping process are made.
