Navigating Islamophobia, COVID-19 bans, and ideology: a study of Tablighi Jamaat’s apolitical movement and jihad in a complex world

This study delves into the multifaceted world of the Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) movement, unraveling its distinctive ideology and objectives, especially concerning politics and jihad. TJ, a global Islamic revivalist organization, has garnered attention due to its unique approach, emphasizing individual spiritual transformation and strict adherence to Islamic rituals. TJ’s all-inclusive membership spans across age, education, occupation, and income, maintaining an apolitical stance that aligns with a secular approach to religion, well-suited for diverse societies. Amidst the backdrop of surging Islamophobia and the COVID-19 pandemic, TJ faced unwarranted accusations of promoting “corona jihad,” further highlighting the complexities it navigates. Nevertheless, TJ perseveres, safeguarding the cultural identity of Muslims in an ever-evolving world. Its trajectory will be molded by external influences, including global perceptions of its mission, the stance of Muslim and non-Muslim authorities, and the cultural tapestry of the societies it engages with. This research employed qualitative interviews, sampling, and content analysis to illuminate the intricate facets and resilience of TJ amid contemporary adversities.
