Background <p>Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an effective and customizable procedure for renal replacement therapy with the potential for good outcomes and quality of life. In Germany its use remains disproportionately low compared to international standards. A&#xa0;major barrier to initiating and maintaining successful PD programs is the placement of the PD catheter.</p> Aim <p>This narrative review aims to summarize the practical knowledge on the selection of suitable catheter models, implantation techniques, postoperative management and common complications associated with PD catheter placement and derives recommendations for action.</p> Material and methods <p>A&#xa0;comprehensive literature search was conducted, with a narrative synthesis of the current evidence and integration of key international guidelines, particularly from the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD).</p> Results <p>The choice of catheter model is less critical than the quality of the implantation technique. Different surgical and interventional techniques yield comparable outcomes if properly performed. Key success factors include interdisciplinary collaboration, standardized procedures, careful exit site planning and structured postoperative management.</p> Discussion <p>Successful catheter placement is crucial for the success of PD treatment. The technique should be tailored to local resources but performed with high quality. Patient education, thorough training and robust quality monitoring are essential to ensure long-term catheter functionality and few complications in order to strengthen the use of PD in Germany and enable optimal treatment.</p>
