Background

In an ageing population the diagnosis of impaired renal function due to age-associated and comorbidity-related renal changes is becoming more frequent.

Objective

Overview of the known pathophysiological foundations of renal senescence, the clinical consequences and potential treatment strategies in the management of older patients.

Material and methods

Evaluation of official statistics, discussion of expert recommendations and basic research based on both human data and findings from various animal models.

Renal senescence remains a process that is still not completely understood in detail. Evidence for treatment strategies and drug approaches primarily comes from animal models but is increasingly finding its way into clinical practice; however, the treatment of older patients with impaired renal function poses a challenge not only due to the possible renal disease but also due to the existing comorbidities.
