A multilocus phylogeny reveals two new species and two first reports of Backusella (Mucorales, Mucoromycota) in the New World

Backusella comprises saprobe species commonly isolated from soil, as well as from leaf litter, plant debris, herbivore dung, invertebrates, and some amphibians. During a survey of fungi in upland forest soils located in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil, six strains of Backusella were isolated. Based on morphological, physiological, and molecular data, two new Backusella species were delimited: B. applanata and B. variicolumellata. In addition, B. locustae and B. solicola were isolated for the first time in the New World.
