Stark in Gesundheitskompetenz
摘要
Several studies highlight limitations in health literacy among adolescents in Austria, particularly regarding the critical appraisal and use of health-related information. Against this background, the present article outlines the conceptualization, implementation, and initial experiences of the intervention “Strengthening health literacy”, which was developed within a design-based research framework.
ObjectiveThe aim of the intervention is to enhance adolescents’ general, digital, and navigational health literacy while simultaneously generating practice-oriented insights for the further development of health education initiatives.
MethodsThe intervention concept is based on a three-pillar model that integrates experiential, participatory, and game-based learning formats. Between 2023 and 2025, the program was piloted with approximately 300 students aged 14 to 19 years from 15 classes in schools across Tyrol, and subsequently in additional out-of-school settings.
ResultsInitial implementation experiences suggest that interactive and gamified approaches—particularly the Nebolus rally as one of the intervention’s core components—foster interest in, and active engagement with, health and social services. The iterative involvement of teachers, external experts, and participating institutions emerged as key for successful implementation. At the same time, challenges became evident with regard to structural anchoring, resource availability, and the long-term sustainability of intervention effects.
ConclusionOverall, the project illustrates the potential of a design-based, lifeworld-oriented approach to promoting adolescents’ health literacy across diverse learning contexts, thereby, contributing to the integration of educational and health-promotion perspectives.
