摘要

Background and objective

In view of the increasingly precarious state of health of children and adolescents, preventive health promotion in schools is becoming increasingly important. The study presented here investigated the potential of art therapy to strengthen mental health and how it has been implemented in schools in Germany.

Study design and methods

A scoping review of the current state of research was conducted, along with internet research on artistic therapy offerings in schools and three focus groups with experts in this field.

Results

The results of various studies, each with different strengths, were combined for the analyses in order to compensate for the weaknesses or inherent biases of individual studies. Art therapies tend to have a positive influence on the mental health and resilience of children and adolescents. Experience shows that practical offerings can be successfully implemented in a school context under certain conditions.

Discussion

With regard to the potential of art therapy to promote psychosocial health, more studies are needed that initially investigate the effects of the methods in the target group of healthy pupils in preventive interventions in schools. It is advisable to triangulate qualitative and quantitative methods in future research, which correspond to the complexity of the interventions, but also to the requirements of recognized scientific research.

Conclusion

For an effective use of art-based therapeutic work in schools, sustainable financing, suitable and protected spaces, an organizational concept for working in small groups, qualified therapeutic specialists, and a positive attitude on the part of schools would be necessary.
