Background <p>The increasing digitalization of the healthcare system requires a&#xa0;high level of digital health literacy to use online health information and digital health technologies. This study aimed to gain a&#xa0;deeper understanding of the difficulties faced by population groups at risk of digital exclusion when searching for and using online health information and digital health technologies.</p> Methods <p>Focus groups were conducted with older adults, adults with a&#xa0;low level of education, adults with low reading and writing skills, and adults living in rural areas. The focus groups were analyzed qualitatively using a&#xa0;deductive–inductive approach.</p> Results <p>A total of 24&#xa0;adults aged 23–84&#xa0;years with a&#xa0;low to medium average level of digital health literacy participated in four focus group discussions. Only a&#xa0;few participants reported searching for and using online health information or digital health technologies. Barriers included data security, lack of relevance in searching for online health information or using digital health technologies, and technical and language difficulties. Using the language function and website translation makes it easier to search for health information online. In addition, participants would desire a&#xa0;(digital) training offer for new digital health technologies and a&#xa0;link between health information and an appointment service.</p> Conclusion <p>The participants reported difficulties dealing with health information and digital health technologies. Strengthening digital health literacy should be prioritized in future research and practice projects.</p>

Background
