Background <p>Dental diseases cause high costs worldwide, but little is known about the expenditure incurred for dental services in children, adolescents and young adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the utilization and costs of dental services of care and prevention specifically for children, adolescents and young adults in Germany.</p> Methods <p>The study population consisted of insured children and adolescents of the health insurance provider AOK Rheinland/Hamburg. The utilization of dental services was analyzed using claims data based on service groups according to the Dentists’ Fee Schedule within the Statutory Health Insurance Scheme in the years 2019 to 2022. The number and percentage of persons using selected outpatient dental services at least once were presented descriptively. In addition, the average number of utilizations of dental services and their total costs within one year were analyzed.</p> Results <p>A&#xa0;total of <i>n</i> = 645,166 individuals were included in the study for the year 2022. Of these, 52% of all children, adolescents and young adults utilized at least one outpatient dental service within the selected service groups. On average, nine services totaling € 216 per person with at least one utilization were claimed. Services for consulting and diagnostics were most frequently recorded at 48% as well as dental calculus removal and individual prophylaxis group at 29% each. The highest average costs were for conservative measures for dental fillings per person with at least one utilization (€ 201).</p> Conclusion <p>The utilization and costs of dental services of care specifically for children, adolescents and young are at a&#xa0;relatively high level. The utilization of dental services for preventive care is too low.</p>
