Background <p>The Austria-specific results of the European Health Literacy Survey (HLS-EU; 2011) led to the creation of several national goals to strengthen health literacy. The strengthening of the organisational health literacy of health care facilities is one measure in this regard. This study examines the education of patients with complex wounds regarding health literacy-friendly communication.</p> Method <p>Six health-literacy friendly aspects were conducted in this descriptive pilot study. Data were collected using a&#xa0;standardized observation instrument and questionnaires (<i>n</i> = 20).</p> Results <p>The results indicate that some health literacy-friendly communication aspects have already been implemented. These include the use of everyday language, a&#xa0;slow speaking pace, and addressing patients’ questions. Deficiencies were found in the use of confirmation techniques and the consideration of cultural needs. Few patients received written information or information in their native language. Additionally, digital media were rarely used to support education. Surveys indicated that most patients found the conversation time sufficient and the environment calm and undisturbed. However, few patients reported that their relatives were actively involved in their treatment.</p> Conclusion <p>There is a&#xa0;need for training healthcare professionals in specific communication techniques and cultural sensitivity. This could improve the quality of education and organizational health literacy. Nevertheless, due to low transferability of the present results, further research is needed.</p>
