摘要

Background

Student midwives receive theoretical training at institutions of higher education and practical training in inpatient and midwifery-led outpatient practice settings. In both settings, students are confronted with demands that can restrict their health and health behaviour during their studies. Structural and behavioural prevention can counteract this and strengthen health and health behaviour. The aim of the study is to analyse the relevance, offer and use of health promotion measures of student midwives.

Methods

The online-based cross-sectional study “Healthy MidStudents” was conducted in Northern Germany at nine study sites between October 17, 2022, and January 31, 2023. Using a self-generated questionnaire, the relevance, offer and use of health promotion measures at institutions of higher education and in practice settings were examined. The data were analysed using descriptive and content analysis.

Results

A total of 342 student midwives were included in the analysis (response rate 61.3%). At institutions of higher education health promotion measures related to nutrition were most commonly categorised as relevant (74.3%), offered (79.8%), and used (69.9%). In practice settings, health promotion measures for taking breaks were most commonly categorised as relevant (73.1%) and measures for fluid intake were most commonly offered (68.1%) and used (61.7%).

Conclusion

This study identified a great need to improve the working and study conditions of student midwives. With regard to health promotion measures, target group-specific measures for student midwives, in particular for taking breaks, are recommended.
