Erfahrungen ukrainischer Migrant*innen mit dem österreichischen Gesundheitssystem: eine qualitative Studie
摘要
From the perspective of migrants, both the fragmentation of relevant information and linguistic and cultural barriers represent significant obstacles to accessing healthcare in the host country. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of people with a Ukrainian migrant background with regard to accessing healthcare in Austria. The focus is on experiences with access barriers, positively perceived support measures and individually developed coping strategies.
MethodsA qualitative, descriptive-explorative study design was used. The data was collected in semi-structured interviews with seventeen Ukrainian migrants.
ResultsUkrainian migrants in Austria often have difficulties accessing medical services. The primary causes were identified as inadequate and/or fragmented information and language barriers. A further challenge is the lack of a common language, as well as insufficient knowledge of the structure, processes and services of the healthcare system. The aforementioned factors result in greater difficulty in accessing high-quality medical care, thereby increasing the risk of serious illnesses. Coping strategies are based on mutual support within the individual social network and the utilization of professional social services.
ConclusionsUkrainian migrants encounter considerable difficulties in accessing Austria’s healthcare system. It is therefore essential to provide easily understandable information in the native language and to ensure the availability of Ukrainian-speaking interpreters. Furthermore, positive experiences and the option of receiving services in English may foster trust and, in turn, enhance accessibility.
