<p>Potato plays a critical role in achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Developmental Goal 2 (SDG2) of zero hunger. West Bengal, as the second-largest potato-producing state in India, has a significant role in food security. This micro-level study addressed the need to plug loopholes in the potato supply chain at the farmer level. This research was conducted in two randomly selected villages—Morhal and Mukundapur—of Hooghly district, West Bengal, during 2024–2025, analyzing data from 204 farmers. The statistical methods, including descriptive statistics, association measures, and cluster analysis, were used to examine socio-demographic factors and potato cultivation economics. The results indicated that socio-demographic features like family size, number of adults in the family, land holding, number of crops taken, and cropping intensity impact farm income. Farmers with larger land sizes had comparatively lower farm income per unit of land. We examined that potato contributed 68% (Mukundapur) to 80% (Morhal) of the total farm income. The net crop revenue was higher in Morhal (Rs 2.81 lakh/ha) than in Mukundapur (Rs 2.44 lakh/ha), primarily due to selling more produce in the market rather than at the farm gate. Cluster analysis based on potato cultivation parameters resulted in 11, 9, and 11 clusters for Morhal, Mukundapur, and combined villages, respectively. Per hectare production varied significantly between 249 and 383 q/ha across groups. Higher yields were consistently accompanied by higher market sales, resulting in greater net crop value. While this study captures the income dimension of SDG2, a follow-up study using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) or dietary variety indices is necessary to examine the nutritional implications of increased farm income, such as dietary diversity and food security experience. This study advocates for differentiated strategies, giving priority to group characteristics for optimizing production cost, increasing output, and facilitating effective marketing to foster the path of SDG2.</p>
