Novel Rapid In Vitro Method for Screening of Potato Genotypes Against Streptomyces sp.

The development of a novel tissue culture-based method for in vitro screening of potato germplasm against common scab disease is a significant and promising advancement in potato research, particularly in the context of the emerging economic importance of this disease in India. The current challenges associated with the longevity of the pathogen in fields and the lack of effective control measures emphasize the need for innovative approaches to managing common scabs. The key features of this novel screening method include its quick, simple, and feasible application in the laboratory, requiring only 35–40 days compared to other screening methods. This is a notable advantage as it allows the rapid identification and screening of a large number of potato germplasms against Streptomyces spp. This efficiency is crucial for expediting the development of common scab-resistant potato varieties, which is a vital strategy for disease management. The successful implementation of this novel screening method opens possibilities for future research and breeding programs aimed at developing potato varieties with increased resistance to common scab.
