Consequences of morpheme access during the comprehension and production of three types of pseudo-compounds

We investigated the influence of morphemes that are compatible with an incorrect morphemic structure, and whether the system is sensitive to the different types of morphemes (i.e. stems and affixes) and to ambiguity in terms of multiple possibilities for morphemic structures afforded by recovered morphemes. To do so, we conducted three experiments using a masked priming lexical decision task in which a pseudo-compound served as the prime for the first embedded morpheme (e.g., bigram as a prime for big) to determine whether morphology influences the access and subsequent availability of the constituent. Specifically, we compare three types of pseudo-compound primes. The pseudo-compounds are existing English words that mimic the constituent structure of a true compound. Two types additionally possess either a true (e.g., linkage) or potential, but nonfunctional, (e.g., damage) suffixed structure, and one type encompasses words where the pseudo-constituents are only free morphemes in English (e.g., carpet). We found that pseudo-compounds that also had a true suffixed structure facilitated the subsequent processing of the embedded morpheme, whereas pure pseudo-compounds and pseudo-compounds with nonfunctional suffixes yielded a processing disadvantage. These findings suggest that the embedded morphemes are accessed even when not truly functioning within the pseudo-compound, and that the system is sensitive to the function(s) (e.g., stem, suffix, etc.) that embedded morphemes have in the language, along with the morphological nature of the whole word.
