Supply Chain Risk Management with Discrete-event Simulation: Insights into Methodological Limitations

Supply chain risk management (SCRM) is crucial for mitigating the uncertainties and disruptions that impact supply chains. This article reviews the application of discrete-event simulation (DES) in SCRM, aiming to enhance understanding and improve practices in this domain. The review spans three phases: formulating the research question, systematically selecting pertinent studies, and conducting a detailed analysis. Unlike existing reviews, which often overlook specific methodologies like DES, this study focuses squarely on its potential within SCRM. Drawing from Scopus database, we meticulously curate English-language DES studies in SCRM to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement. Our findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced modeling accuracy and rigorous validation processes to better anticipate and manage risks in the dynamic landscape of supply chains. By addressing these shortcomings, future research can elevate the efficacy of DES in SCRM and contribute to advancing both theoretical insights and practical applications in supply chain management.
