<p>Pathological internet use (PIU) is prevalent among Chinese adolescents and is closely linked to emotional disorder symptoms and psychological resources. However, previous variable-centered and whole-sample network studies have not adequately addressed subgroup heterogeneity. This study aimed to identify distinct profiles and examine subgroup-specific network patterns. A total of 6386 Chinese adolescents completed measures of PIU, meaning in life, coping styles, academic self-efficacy, and emotional disorder symptoms. Latent profile analysis identified four subgroups: distressed but low PIU (16.7%), adaptive (35.1%), high-risk (17.2%), and high PIU but balanced functioning (31.0%). Network analyses showed that the high-risk group had significantly greater global strength, indicating stronger interconnections among maladaptive behaviors, distress, and reduced resources. Mood change and positive coping were consistent bridge nodes across groups, and between-group differences were mainly found within the PIU cluster and its links with emotional symptoms and meaning in life. These findings suggest substantial heterogeneity across adolescent profiles and support a profile-specific, network-informed approach to interventions for adolescent PIU.</p>
