摘要

Alcoholism is the chronic consumption of alcohol with serious physical, social, and mental consequences. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of alcoholism among adults worldwide. A systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies on alcoholism were conducted using four databases and following PRISMA guidelines. Prevalence was calculated using a random effects model with a 95% confidence interval. Cochran's Q and I2 statistics were performed to assess heterogeneity among the included studies, while funnel plots and Egger's tests were used to evaluate publication bias. The found prevalence of alcoholism was 12% (95% CI: 7%-16%). Men were 3.84 times more likely to develop alcoholism than women (OR = 3.84 [95% CI: 2.82–5.22]). These findings highlight the need for early interventions and targeted strategies to combat alcoholism, particularly among men.
