<p>Subthreshold depression (SubD) significantly affects individuals' well-being and psychosocial functioning and is a known risk factor for major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aimed to investigate impairments in emotional conflict processing in SubD individuals using event-related potential (ERP) recordings. Healthy controls (HC) and SubD individuals (32 in each group) completed a word-face Stroop task while ERP data were collected. Compared to the HC group, SubD individuals exhibited lower accuracy, longer response times, and increased N2 amplitudes in the prefrontal mid-lobe, regardless of stimulus type. Additionally, SubD individuals showed heightened N450 amplitudes and reduced conflict SP amplitudes during incongruent stimuli. These results indicate SubD individuals have cognitive deficits in emotional conflict processing, with heightened sensitivity to emotional stimuli but delayed resolution.These findings highlight cognitive deficits in emotional conflict processing in SubD, providing insights into its neurophysiological underpinnings and potential strategies for MDD prevention.</p>
