Design of All-Optical 4 × 2 Encoder Based on Coupled Metal–Insulator-Metal Plasmonic Waveguides
摘要
This paper presents a 4 × 2 plasmonic encoder with a high extinction ratio and low crosstalk for use in photonic integrated circuits. The waveguides comprise SiO2 dielectrics sandwiched within a thick silver layer, forming metal–insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguides. In the design procedure, a 3-dB coupler is designed using the coupled mode theory (CMT) and simulated by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The proposed encoder shows a minimum extinction ratio (ERmin) of 6.28 dB and low crosstalk (CT) of -7.13 dB at a wavelength of 1.55 μm. The total area of the encoder is 14.4 μm2, which confirms its compact footprint and suitability for use in on-chip applications.
