Cancer Detection Using Multi-layered Kretschmann Configuration–based Refractive Index Sensor

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors have become one of the most useful tools in biomedical diagnostics, especially for identifying biomarkers like cancer. Here, we suggest a novel layered SPR design to enhance the sensitivity and characteristics parameters of SPR-based cancer detection by utilizing the optoelectronic qualities of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), ferric oxide (Fe2O3), and bi-metallic (silver and platinum) metals. The suggested sensor is more sensitive to even a lower alteration in biomarker concentrations, which could be useful for early cancer detection. Cancer cells’ refractive index (RI) changes are found using the angle interrogation technique. The RI of the cancer cells has been changing from 1.392 to 1.401 for six distinct cancerous cells. The analysis indicated shows that the MCF-7 sample has the highest sensitivity for angular interrogation at 200.428 deg/RIU.
