<p>Given the high prevalence of type&#xa0;2 diabetes mellitus in Germany and the high likelihood of surgical intervention in the lifetime of patients with type&#xa0;2 diabetes mellitus, there is an urgent need to optimize perioperative blood glucose control to reduce overall perioperative morbidity and mortality. Good interdisciplinary collaboration is essential preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively.</p>
