Potential of sustainability science for the healthcare sector
摘要
Thus far, no firm understanding of the overarching role that sustainability science could play in healthcare practice appears to have been established. Based on a clarification of the core characteristics defining sustainability research, four potential roles are introduced and explained in detail in this article: the role as an integrative force, mediating between the ecological, social, and economic aspects of sustainability; the role as a translator of theoretical–conceptual approaches from sustainability science into practice; the role as a coordinator, bringing together stakeholders from theory and practice in the sense of transdisciplinary research; the role as an educator, integrating education for sustainable development across all areas of medicine. The current state of sustainability and potential areas of action in diabetology are also discussed. Key factors identified for advancing sustainability include waste reduction and the promotion of a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.
