摘要

Obesity is a highly prevalent (prevalence in adults in Germany ~20%), chronic progressive disease that can reduce life expectancy and quality of life. Therapeutic approaches primarily consist of long-term behavioral interventions aimed at lifestyle modifications, supplemented by pharmacological treatments and bariatric surgical procedures. For people living with obesity in Germany, there is a significant deficit in the medical treatment infrastructure. The treatment access gap is mainly caused by a lack of legal frameworks for guideline-driven obesity management. With the inauguration of the Disease Management Program (DMP) for Obesity on July 1, 2024, there is now the prospect of more structured and improved care. Although implementation of the DMP is still in the preparatory phase, it has the potential to improve the quality of obesity management in Germany by using a multimodal, sustainable, and structured approach.
