摘要

Individual experiences shape the perception of diabetes mellitus. A case is used to illustrate how health care in the former Soviet Union, which varied in quality and depended on the local place of residence and knowledge about diabetes mellitus, influenced treatment. Access to the medical system and the level of education of those affected and their social environment guided subjective perceptions of the disease (perceived symptoms, time course, causes, controllability, consequences, competencies) and diagnostics and possible therapies. These factors continue to play a role even after immigration to Germany and should be included in the counseling in a supportive manner.
