Nichtinvasive Glukosemessung – bereit für die Praxis?

Characteristic for noninvasive glucose measurement systems is measurement without penetration of the skin. There are various physical methods based on the application of energy, e.g., electromagnetic radiation, into the tissue and the recording of the subsequent reaction. Many of these have been tested in laboratory studies. However, there are several requirements for transferring such technology into a functional device. These include sufficient measurement accuracy, high wearing comfort, and high reliability. Despite a large number of past and current projects, it has not yet been possible to bring such a device to market. The main reasons for this are the major challenges of noninvasive measurement technology, such as the influence of interfering substances and different skin properties, as well as the miniaturization of the technical components. A selection of approaches which have shown similar accuracy to early systems for continuous glucose measurement in studies is presented. The potential of smartwatches with a blood glucose measurement function is also discussed.
